Robert F. Mager, Ph.D.

Background

Dr. Robert Mager is the most recognized name in training and education. His writings have been translated into 16 languages and over three million copies of his books have been sold. He has received numerous honors and awards, including Distinguished Contribution to the Field of Human Resource Development, presented by the American Society for Training and Development, Distinguished Professional Achievement, presented by the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) and the ISPI Armed Forces Chapter's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Robert F. Mager has been named the recipient of the 2005 Public Service in Behavior Analysis award from the Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis. The award is given to an individual who, in the Society's eyes, has addressed significant problems using methods directly linked to scientifically sound behavior analysis or that effectively incorporate behavioral principles. In naming Dr. Mager, the Society cited his pioneering contributions to training which are consistent with a behavioral approach. The Society made particular mention of Mager's Criterion-Referenced Instruction methodology which has been "extremely successful and has been adopted by thousands of organizations and managers around the world."

Publishing credits

The author of numerous books, technical papers, and articles, Dr. Mager is perhaps best known for his book Preparing Instructional Objectives-listed as one of the Museum of Education's "Books of the Century." Other distinguished Mager books include Analyzing Performance Problems (with Peter Pipe), and What Every Manager Should Know About Training. He also recently published a new mystery novel entitled Killer in Our Midst (to find out more about this novel click here). His most recent book is Life in the Pinball Machine, a reflection of Mager's life in learning and human performance.

Educational background

Dr. Mager received his A.B. and M.A. degrees from Ohio University and his Ph.D. in Psychology from the State University of Iowa.
